Autumn has come to the country. The season is the most popular moment in Japan, because of its scenic autumn foliage. Trailing Route
Autumn Leaves are truly a part of the Japanese heart. At this time, I went to Sengokuhara in Hakone to see such a beautiful escape. The short trail begins with the golden Japanese Pampas Grass at Sengoku Highland and ends with the excursion of Hakone Shisseikaen. It takes only 20 minutes by walk between each location.
1. What Autumn Feels Like
About Sengokuhara
Sengokuhara (仙石原) is a picturesque area in Hakone. Known for its expansive highlands and serene atmosphere, it is a popular destination for nature lovers. One of its standout attractions is the Sengokuhara Susuki Grass Fields, where Japanese pampas grass (Susuki) blooms, especially during autumn, creating stunning golden landscapes.
What Makes it Unique?
The area transforms into a mesmerising golden expanse each autumn, as its sprawling fields of Japanese pampas grass (Susuki) sway gently under the crisp breeze, creating a dreamlike landscape perfect for leisurely walks or capturing stunning photographs.
The area is also home to museums like the Pola Museum of Art, hot springs, and trails that offer excellent hiking opportunities. With its cool climate, open spaces, and proximity to Mount Hakone, Sengokuhara provides a peaceful escape from urban life and showcases seasonal beauty throughout the year.
2. This is Your Golden Hour
At 9:00 am
That morning, I started my journey from Odawara Railway Station and took a T line bus heading to Togendai Terminal. I was surprised to see a long queue of cars around the Hakone Yumoto area. Even in such an early morning, many people gathered to see autumn foliage.
After an hour’s ride, I managed to reach Sengokuhara. Few people visited there at that time because pampas grasses were still waiting for the sunshine to glow. Appreciating the rain last night, each spike was wet and had raindrops. I thought that this kind of scenery was also a part of autumn vibes.
As I climbed to the top of the trail, the panoramic view of Sengokuhara gradually came into sight. Although the autumn foliage was delayed this year, I felt relieved to witness its beauty once again. The silence and sound of the wind offered a sensational moment to me.
At 11:00 am
Finally, the Golden Hour begins as the Sun rises above the mountains. The pampas grasses transformed into golden waves under the crisp seasonal blue skies. They enjoyed dancing when the wind blew, making it a truly seasonal beauty of Sengokuhara. The trail was filled with many visitors and they took the time to take photos with friends and families.
The spike was dried by the sunshine and each spike became like fluffy feathers. I felt that they could fly into the air like seeds of dandelions. In terms of gold, the officials offer the visitors extra toilet cabinets at the back of the bus stop, so the visitors appreciate the beauty as they like.
3. Watching Leaves Peacefully
Trail to Hakone Shisseikaen
Let’s take a leisurely stroll after satisfying with the Golden Hour. On the way to the Hakone Shisseikaen, there were coloured maple and gingko trees everywhere. The combination of these trees and the mountains around made me relaxed. Especially, a single maple tree with scenic mountain’s background was extraordinal.
This is a Hidden Foliage Spot
Hakone Shisseikaen (箱根湿生花園), or Hakone Botanical Garden of Wetlands, offers a tranquil retreat in autumn, showcasing vibrant seasonal foliage alongside unique wetlands. This garden beautifully blends natural wonders and wetland flowers, creating a perfect destination for those seeking to experience Hakone’s natural charm.
In late November, most wetland flowers are withered and autumn foliage replaces their post. The land is filled with fallen leaves like a huge brown rug. Also, the leaves in various colours meticulously adorn the canopy above. It was impressive that I heard the sound of fallen leaves within the silent field.
What I want to emphasise is the garden’s quiet charm. With the peak season having passed, there were only a few visitors. Despite its breathtaking landscape, I could enjoy the serenity without the hustle and bustle of more crowded areas. It was truly exceptional to feel nature’s open-handed greatness.

4. Conclusion
Sengokuhara in autumn leaves a lasting impression with its golden pampas grass fields and beautiful foliage, offering a perfect blend of seasonal beauty and tranquility. As the vibrant hues fade into winter, this enchanting destination reminds us of nature’s fleeting charm and the importance of savoring each moment in the present.
Advises For Those Who Visiting
I recommend visiting early in the morning before the area gets crowded with visitors. It’s also better to use public transportation instead of driving, as there’s a chance of getting stuck in traffic. The Hakone Freepass is a great option, offering unlimited access to various transportation modes in Hakone for 2 or 3 days.
