Matsushima (松島), a renowned destination in Miyagi Prefecture celebrated as one of Japan’s Three Scenic Views, offers a picturesque bay with pine-covered islets. It is accessible within 40 minutes via the JR Senseki Line from Sendai Railway Station, making Matsushima-kaigan Station the ideal base for exploring its scenic spots and witnessing the stunning beauty of autumn foliage.
1. What Autumn Feels Like
About Matsushima
With over 260 islands scattered across its bay, Matsushima (松島) offers breathtaking beauty. In autumn, the area transforms into a vibrant masterpiece as maple and ginkgo trees decorate its historic sites and islands with vivid hues of red, orange, and yellow.
Matsushima has long captivated visitors with its picturesque landscape and profound cultural heritage. Its name, meaning “Pine Islands,” reflects the region’s iconic view of small islets covered with pine trees. Besides its scenic beauty, the place is home to several temples, including Zuiganji and Entsuin, which showcase exquisite autumnal scenery.
What Makes it Unique?
Matsushima is deeply connected to Okunohosomichi (奥の細道), the celebrated travelogue by Matsuo Basho, Japan’s most famous haiku poet. During his journey through the Tohoku region, Basho visited Matsushima and was so struck by its beauty that he left no haiku, famously expressing that its splendor rendered him speechless.
Also, the area has a significant connection with Masamune Date (伊達政宗), the powerful daimyo of the Sendai domain during the Edo period. Known as the “One-Eyed Dragon of Oshu,” Masamune contributed to the development of Matsushima as a cultural and religious hub.
2. Only in Matsushima
松島や ああ松島や 松島や
This haiku is said to have been composed in Matsushima by a disciple who accompanied Matsuo Basho. The poem means, “How could one possibly describe the place called Matsushima… truly, Matsushima is…” and is renowned as a symbol of the breathtaking beauty of Matsushima’s scenery.
I spent a night at the scenic hotel Komatsukan Kofutei (小松館好風亭), located near Fukuura Bridge. From my room, I enjoyed a breathtaking view of Matsushima, with its serene bay and pine-covered islets. At sunrise, the sea sparkled, and the islet surfaces gleamed brightly, creating a truly exceptional and unforgettable moment that captured the beauty of the region.
Fukuura Island
I started my foliage excursion from Fukuura Island (福浦島). The island is a hidden gem for experiencing Matsushima’s autumn foliage. Connected to the mainland by a striking red bridge “Fukuura Bridge“, it offers a peaceful escape filled with vivid autumn colours.
Once I reached the mainland, many pine trees welcomed my visit. The island has pavements to explore for visitors, offering easy access to the foliage and its scenic viewpoints. A leisurely walk through its forested trails reveals a stunning blend of various crimson maples.
Just walked the path for ten minutes, I reached the first viewpoint. Under the watchful gaze of Benzaiten, I took a moment to fully enjoy the breathtaking scenery of Matsushima. Blessed with great weather and a pleasant breeze, I felt a sense of calm and serenity wash over me.
This is Matsushima
After leaving Benzaiten, I needed to walk another 10 minutes and more to reach the destination where the highlight of the island. On the way to get there, the sight of trees forming a tunnel and continuously showering me with fallen leaves felt like receiving a blessing. Along the way, I encountered vividly coloured autumn leaves, and their brilliant appearance brought a soothing sense of comfort.
Finally, I arrived at Miharashidai (見晴台), the scenic viewpoint of Fukuura Island with flowering autumn foliage. Just as Matsuo Basho and his disciple were fascinated by the breathtaking scenery of Matsushima, I too could do nothing but stand in awe of its unparalleled beauty. Perhaps this feeling, this experience, is What Defines Matsushima Itself.

3. Mild And Clear Taste
Trail between Zuiganji Temple
Let’s take a bit of a stroll after satisfying with the foliage in Fukuura Island. Along the way, there were lively spots such as Zuiganji Godaido (瑞巌寺五大堂) and the Sightseeing Cruise terminal, adding to the vibrant atmosphere. While engrossed in the breathtaking scenery, I was startled to come across the “Sukashi Bridge,” with its see-through structure.
Foliage in Historical Temple
Zuiganji Temple (瑞巌寺), a designated national treasure, stands as a sanctuary for autumn foliage in Matsushima. Encircled by towering centuries-old cedar trees, the temple grounds come alive with vivid autumn hues, creating a tranquil setting for contemplation.

Mild and Clear Appearance
What I want to tell you is the appearance of the foliage in Matsushima. I took a walk around Entsuin Temple and I noticed that its taste of colour was much different than that of my home. With its more vibrant colours and tranquil appearance, it felt like a canvas perfectly capturing the essence of Matsushima itself.
In a small cemetery, there was a serene grove of maple trees. The foliage was at its peak, with leaves glowing in vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow under the sunlight, creating a magical atmosphere. I was so captivated by the breathtaking autumn scenery in Matsushima that I completely lost track of time, immersed in its beauty.

This trip left me with the impression that the beauty of Matsushima remains unchanged from the time of Basho and his disciple, offering the same awe-inspiring scenery they experienced.
